Mental Arithmetic at the Heart of the New 2025 Curriculum

Starting in the 2025 school year, the new mathematics curriculum will place a stronger emphasis on mental arithmetic, beginning in Cycle 2 and continuing throughout the student’s schooling. This development reflects the Ministry’s desire to reaffirm the importance of numerical fluency and its impact on academic success.

Beyond simple operations, mental arithmetic develops memory, mental agility, focus, and self-confidence. It allows students to quickly estimate a result, check the consistency of a reasoning process, and become more autonomous when faced with a problem. It is also a powerful tool for strengthening number sense and understanding mathematical relationships.

The 2025 curriculum includes daily mental math routines, clear learning progressions, and automation goals adapted to each grade level. At LIFT, teachers are committed to offering regular and varied practice (games, challenges, oral and written activities) to firmly anchor these skills.

This approach is part of our broader mission to consolidate core skills and provide differentiated support. Because mastering the basics is also the key to reasoning, solving, and inventing.
